The number of motorbikes in Vietnam has increased 48-fold over the last three decades, from 1.2 million in 1990 to over 58 million in 2018, according to the Department of Traffic Safety at the Ministry of Transport. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have the largest number, with nearly 6 million and 8.5 million, respectively.

I’ll be hopping on the back of a motorbike to make my way to a coffee shop in a few minutes.

I will never forget this building in Beijing, the Gateway Centre (佳程广场), as the place I had my first “real” meeting with a global company eighteen years ago. Long story short, a month before this meeting, TLP had donated one library to a rural elementary school in Shaanxi with the Cummins Xi’an office. This meeting was to talk about future support from the Cummins American foundation. I remember being simultaneously overprepared and wholly lost. By the end of the short meeting, Cummins had committed to support twenty libraries throughout China. To this day, Cummins continues to support The Library Project annually.

Me, at 3:20 AM, asking myself, why, I purchased a flight leaving for China at 3:20 AM, what, Vietnam did to China Southern Airlines to only have one flight leaving Saigon at 3:20 AM, and, how, I have maintained a consistent state of sobriety for nine years.

There are very few things that make me happier in life than art. This is a piece created by a Shanghai-based artist, @hanlilin2020. I met Lin Lin nineteen years ago when I first moved to Dalian, China; she was my first friend in China. I picked up this piece during my recent trip to Shanghai when I had the opportunity to visit her studio.

I enjoy art that challenges me. This image depicts a woman crucified onto a 丰 (fēng), which translates to “rich” in English. Powerful.

Check out Lin Lin’s art at @hanlilin2020

I learned how to use an xacto knife twenty-five years ago while working nights at a design firm in Phoenix. The owner, Don Rogers, taught me how to cut paper, straight every time, because there is no other way. Today, I cut twenty-nine individual pages for a book of photography that I’m putting together; each page is perfect, I still got it. Don would be proud.
